Since times immemorial people are using honey for various purposes it has also become a sort of traditional medicine. It is also used in Ayurvedic and Unani preparations. Everyone is aware of the benefits of honey, its myriad varieties and a number of health benefits. It is also pleasant and sweet to taste and easily available. Some honey has a very good aroma and it is also used as a replacement for sugar. It is said that the percentage of sugar gets reduced if you replace it with normal sugar. It has helped many in clearing soreness of throat, constipation, dehydration, weight loss i.e., weight reduction. Many singers have commended the benefit of honey for helping them in singing.
So much has been written about Honey. Researchers are turning up more and more new evidence of honey's medical benefits in many areas. Honey not only fights infection and aids tissue healing but also helps reduce inflammation and scarring. In addition, it is often used for treating digestive problems such as diarrhea, indigestion, stomach ulcers and gastroenteritis.

Some Experiences with Honey has been as follows,

Benefits Lemon and Honey – The combination of lemon and honey was used but it did not reduce my weight but was helpful in maintaining my weight and health.
Benefits Vinegar and Honey – In-order to reduce weight I tried vinegar and honey formula but was not successful and had to discontinue.
Benefits Honey and Cinnamon – This formula of honey and cinnamon was good and helped me in maintaining my weight but did not help in reducing the weight. However this is a good remedy for certain coughs and cold symptoms.
Benefits Honey and Milk - This is a good combination and benefits in the bowel movements and reducing acidity.
Benefits of Honey and Apple- This is supposed to reduce weight but in my experience it did not help me in reducing my weight.
Benefits of Honey as a hibernation diet – This did not help me in my fight with the bulge.
There are various studies which suggest that a combination of other herbs with honey cures arthritis, Flu etc. but one should be cautious while using any of the combination. Sometimes a person may have problem with using honey alone or with other combinations and there are certain disadvantages to certain people.
Nowadays it is difficult to get pure honey and it is better to get full information before getting into any regimen. For some honey may be beneficial and there are also certain disadvantages in honey. However it is useful when combined with milk or cinnamon or black pepper. Especially for allergies and cough due to cold or dry cough. Honey is a good food and can also be considered as a super food. But it has it's own limitation. It is not a magic cure or a magic formula. It should be used with right precautions.

World in Turmoil

By Mohammed Sadullah Khan (08-01-2009)

The human nature of greed and selfishness has brought about the misery to the whole world. This has given twisted meaning to the religions and other systems of governments. Man is pursuing a profession of destruction rather than construction.

We are the real witnesses to the ill effects of this greed. The 26/11 episode which not only shocked the Indians but the entire world is a grim reminder of what a handful of terrorists can bring about. In the process they have killed the key officials of Anti-Terrorism Squad. People are still not in a position to gauge the real motive of their operation. The war mongering exercise by the two neighbouring democratic elected governments and nuclear powers has caused many peace loving citizens sleepless nights. However it seems that the war or peace is not in the hands of these democratically elected governments. The string of powers which control the decisions of war or peace is outside these rulers. However the threats by these governments will definitely bring about a solace to their followers and enhance their vote banks politics. Media and the vitriolic politicians have done their best to provoke these countries into a war. A real war will be a disaster to the region

Middle East has been a region of turmoil and disaster for many decades. The economic sanctions have killed millions of Iraqi's and the policies of its dictator another million and the so called freedom is leading them to further death and destruction. A pair of 10's shoes may not help the daily death and mayhem but will remain a symbol in the years to come. A strong and peaceful Iraq would have been a boon for the region. Afghanistan is still groping for stability.

We have also seen the pounding of the Gaza strip by the Israeli bombs and killings of innocent children and women for no fault of their. Further the entry of heavy tanks into the civilian and densly populated areas as a part of ground offensive has already caused substantial financial and human loss. By the time the silent international community takes a firm stand, Israel might have accomplished its task of eliminating and destroying its targets. This process has being going on since many years. Peace and dialogue may still remain elusive.

The capture of Tamil Tigers strong-hold by the Sri-Lankan government and a firm resolve to end the problem of the tigers may not bring about the required peace to the island.

The over zealousness to get quick and easy money has led to the Financial crisis. There is a fear of collapse of the global financial system. The sub-prime crisis was the stepping stone to the financial problems of the world. The world is being plagued by other problems like the recessionary trend, which is making millions lose their jobs and means of livelihood. Many stable organizations are facing a glut and need stimulus packages to provide bread and butter to their employees. We have also seen that inspite of tighter controls, the corrupt practices of the financial markets, banking, investment institutions and the mismanaged multinational corporations are on rise. Basically this is nothing but a failure of the Capitalistic culture. Many including multinational organizations have become victim to the siphoning of 50 billion dollars by Bernard Madoff. The down trend of global share markets has eroded the value of billionaires apart from making many small investors lose their life-time savings. The entire global loss is estimated over 40 trillion dollars. The latest to the list is Satyam fiasco, which may cost its investors over a billion dollars and may cause the booming IT sector of India a big jolt.

The fluctuating price of oil has caused many mis-calculations. The shortage of food has also given rise to the speculation of increase in starvation deaths. The green house effect and the increasing levels of pollutions have caused alarming level of global warming. Many plants and animals are extinct and some are on verge of extinction.

We have seen 21st century pirates holding to ransom the most advanced countries. With the departure of Ethiopian troops the popped up government in Somalia will not be able to survive for long. This will create more blood shed and give free hand to the pirates. It was rightly suggested that the business has a right to do business and not to get involved in the war of sorts. The Insurers have once again decided not to insure the shipments traveling in those areas or to hike the premiums multi-fold.

It is high time that various international organizations under the umbrella of United Nations with the co-operation of the world powerful nations are given free hand and resources. They should do away with their myopic policies and frame the right policies, free from bias and prejudices in-order to tackle the real problems the world is facing. The world has become a global village, which cannot stand wars or threats of war. All problems need to be solved permanently. United States with its hegemony, should be a part and parcel of any initiative and be impartial in solving the problems of the world by dialogue and mutual respect. A peaceful world free from conflict, greed and adhering to human rights is for the benefit of the present generations and the future generations.

(Photograph showing Mr. Mohammed Sadullah Khan, Faculty Member, Institute of Banking with Mr. Syed Kaleemullah Hussaini, Manager, Arab Commercial Enterprises Ltd. and Mr. I. Bader, Senior Surveyor/Manager, Arabian Inspection & Survey Co. Ltd.)

The Insurance Industry has grown tremendously during last couple of years. The major reasons attributed to this growth are making of Motor and Medical Insurance compulsory. There is also an active involvement of Banks and even Medical Malpractice Insurance has been made mandatory. The fast pace of growth in the Industry has led to a vacuum of professionals. Insurance is a Technical area and need well qualified and trained professionals to give the right direction to this fast paced growth.

Jinn in my office

Where is the Jinn?

By Mohammed Sadullah Khan

One cloudy, misty, dusty and winter morning I woke up and found that the weather was bit chill in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Whilst going to office I could find that my visibility was restricted as the weather was similar to Transylvania, the birth place of dracula. I could feel the bony dracula's moving about on the footpaths. I tried to re-collect the count dracula's movies where in a cold blooded vampire used to roam in the streets looking for its prey.

I reached my office on time and found that it was colder than outside. When I touched my seat I felt like standing for few more minutes before I took my seat. There was a bit of commotion and whispers around. Finally one of my colleagues, a typical Malayalee, who was over conscious of the situation, went on asking, who turned the temperature control knob. Another colleague of our's, from the mountainous region of Indian sub-continent joined us and started complaining that somebody had reduced the temperature to 5 degree centigrade and the office seemed to have frozen. He retorted that, "I had increased the temperature and now it is bit comfortable and this has happened earlier too".

Finally our first colleague got exhausted after checking with everyone and getting a negative response. In his eagerness to find the culprit, he did his best by cross-checking with others and taking a print out of telephone numbers dialed station-wise and re-checking them. When all his exercises became futile, he proposed that it may be the Jinn which had fiddled with the temperature knob.

This proposition me nostalgic. I had heard about Jinee when I was 4 year old. My mother used to tell us not to go near a tree, as she had seen light and commotion during night. Early in the morning she used to find empty boxes of sweets. She also told us that her great grandfather used to control a Jinn. Other stories flickered of Jinn being responsible for changing the place of a sleeping person from one room to another room. Many a times Jinn had thrown persons from cot to a pit. People have become mad by seeing Jinn. They can change their form and can come in any living form. They can come out of thin air and vanish into thin air. They have males, females and children. Their preferred forms are cats and snakes. The unforgettable story of Alladin and his magic lamp, generated a fresh hope.

The very thought of Jinn brought fear and hope in my mind. I tried to explain the characteristics of Jinn to my colleagues, who were a mix of Indians and Saudis. Gradually the office closure time approached, on that particular day our entire office became empty due to the fear of Jinn. I was the only one to be left in the office. Inspite of lingering fear, I had to stay beyond the office hours that evening due to my commitment to work. Whilst sitting on my computer in eerie silence, I suddenly heard a violent noise in the reception area of my office. My breathing reduced and my eyes focused at the reception door. I felt that this may be the Jinn, who had fiddled with the temperature knob. I could hear small commotion outside. Suddenly the security door opened and I found a six footer entering our office in white robe. He was my Saudi colleague and buddy. But he did not speak to me, I thought that Jinn might have come in his form and kept quite staring pensively at my computer. He straight away went to the bathroom. I hurriedly tried to finish my job and was able to complete it, before the Jinn could come out. Immediately I rushed towards the security door, I heard some sound in the reception area and once again fear gripped me. Finally I decided to take the Jinn head on, I opened the door and was bit amazed to see one of my ex-colleague, another Saudi gentleman. Saying a hello in low tone I rushed out of my office. Reading verses and thanking God for not bringing me into confrontation with those Jinns in my colleague and ex-colleague form.

The next day, I found similar commotion in my office, as was there a day earlier. On enquiring I came to know that the entire lights of the office were on for the whole night, this made me further nervous.

Gathering courage I confessed to my colleagues that I was not the last person to leave the office. But there was one person after me whose job was to shut the lights off. Hence I am blameless. Then my six-footer colleague in robe, indeed confessed that he had come to office the day before and forgot to switch off the lights. This brought a big relief to me. Ultimately I realized that the persons whom I had seen earlier were not Jinns but human beings like us.

Corporate Governance

The current failure of multinational companies in-spite of their capability to hire the best talent, train them and provide them with the unbelievable pay packages should make us open our eyes. The corporate governance lacking moral values is going to be defeated. Today we find dishonest acts of the management as the practices of management principles. This will lead to the decaying of the organizations. It is very much important that moral values are inculcated among the staff as well as the top management. The pay scales should be reasonable and based on performance, all management courses and trainings should have an element of moral sciences in-order to make sure that the people working for the organization make it really useful to the entire stakeholders.

Medical Malpractice Insurance

The recent news regarding Doctors needing insurance to practice in Kingdom. It is a good decision to enforce Medical Malpractice Insurance for doctors. The recent cases of malpractices in the Kingdom, will also help in encouraging these professionals to buy insurance. Only selected few are offering this type of policy. The policy should be reasonably priced and since the policy is "claims made policy", it is important that in-order the policy to be effective, it should be continuous. Changing insurer's mid-term will jeopardize the claim. The Companies offering MM insurance should come to an agreement to give the benefit of continuous insurance if the insured changes the insurer. Like Motor Insurance, MM Insurance should give the required peace of mind to the doctors.

Police Clearance – 23-01-2010

Reference to Indians needing police clearance for Saudi visas. At present the Indians, who are applying for passport have to get a police clearance certificate in-order to acquire a passport. The validity of most of the passports is 10 years and during this period a person may commit a crime. It is a good decision to insist upon the PCC for Employment Visa. This will end the suspicions and will stop the person with criminal records from coming to Saudi Arabia. However on the negative aspect the police department will have to work harder and the normal 4-5 week clearance period will be further delayed and a prospective employee may end up loosing his precious time.

War Hysteria – 21-01-2010

It will be really foolish on part of India and Pakistan to be conned into a war by out fits like Al Qaeda, Let or any other foreign agency/power with ulterior motives. Both the countries have been progressing satisfactorily and face similar problems. A war will push these countries at-least a decade backwards. The bureaucrats and other peace loving citizens should see to it that a war hysteria is not built up. War hysteria may lead to a full scale war, which will have severe bad consequences.

Nigeria Violence – 20-01-2010

The Communal riots are one of the dangerous menace usually caused due to years of distrust, lack of free and open communication between the communities. Most of these riots can be blamed to the political motives. During such riots anti-social elements get the full advantage, thereby furthering animosity. In countries like India riots had occurred even at the "fall of an hat" (proverbial saying). The buying of an egg and the accident between a cyclist and an auto rickshaw have led to riots. To overcome this problem politicians have to be taken into confidence and committees have to formed at local levels to foster peace and understanding among different religious and ethnic communities.
